Come on out and run Kane Creek with us on December 31st. This will be the last trail run of the year! (obviously)
We will meet at the Cinema at 9:00am. Bring your woolen mittens, hot drinks, and seat warmers as we will start out quite chilly.
Kane Creek is a fun trail and is rated a 6 on the new system (4 on the old). With some snow and potentially some ice still about, it may be a touch more difficult. If you’d like to read more about Kane Creek trail, follow this link http://www.utah.com/offroad/kane_creek.htm
See you on the trail!!

Talk about a cold and snowy day in Moab. Those who wonder if Moab is always warm and whether it snows in the winter should check out these pictures.
I think it started somewhere around 10 degrees this morning but once the sun started shining down, it felt warmer than it was. (Well, true I was in a closed in Wrangler with the heater running but everyone else didn’t look too cold.)
A good group showed up at the Shell station including Gary Lee in his NEW Samurai. This was his trail test and his new rig performed very well.

After airing down and a failed attempt to get up the Big Ugly obstacle,

we were on our gentle way up Black Mesa. Jim was leading the way and was following in an ATV track that had been on the same trail the day before. We climbed higher and higher. Finally, when we reached 7500 ft. altitude, the ATV track ended and we had to break trail. Trail breaking turned out harder than we thought so after everyone who was interested gave it a shot, we stopped for lunch and photos and made our way back down.

After making our way back down, everyone except Jeff decided to continue onto the Strike Ravine trail. Jeff was having trouble with his rig and wanted to get it fixed so headed back home. Jim continued to lead through some beautiful scenery, redrock with snow…..

Once we worked our way down into the ravine and got near the mine, things got a little slippery. Most everyone had to give this spot a couple of tries before getting up……….

Eventually everyone made it under their own power, no tow straps needed! The rest of the trail was uneventful and we all made our way back to civilization. This was a really fun trail and the snow added a twist to the typical Moab Jeep trail. Thanks Jim for your guiding expertise!
Is spring almost here??

Anyone up for a snow run on Saturday?
If so, get your boots, hats, and gloves together and meet out at the Shell station south of town at 9:00am. (Those living further south can meet at Strike Ravine entrance at 9:30)
This trail is a member favorite for snow and will include portions of the Strike Ravine trail, a trip up onto Black Mesa (I think that’s the right one) and then dropping down to the Pack Creek area.
The scenery and experience should be stunning. If you haven’t done much wheeling in the snow, now’s your chance. Bundle up and we’ll see you out there.
Upcoming Trails
Greetings and Happy Holidays! Incredibly the weather is holding nicely for Jeepin’ in the Moab! We had a request from a Castle Valley resident to run Porcupine Rim. This is not a terribly difficult trail although there are a few ledges here and there but it is a little bumpy. Okay, it’s a lot bumpy. But there are rewards in that the views are fantastic.
We had 4 Jeeps, a full sized truck, and 1 Suzuki in the group and we headed off on the trail. This trail begins off of Sand Flats Road in the Recreation area just east of Moab. We aired down and worked our way along the trail………

up and over a few obstacles, making our way to the overlook and lunch spot.

This is a view of Castle Rock and the Priest and Nuns overlooking Castle Valley. We spent some time identifying Rick’s and Matt’s houses and generally just soaked in the views and enjoyed the sunshine.

This is a view of Round Mountain which is a remnant of ancient volcanic activity.
It appears that Jim was certainly enjoying the scenery and why not? The La Sals are so beautiful covered with snow.

Finally after a long and winding journey…………….

We reached the end of the trail.

Then after a brief stop, we made our bumpy way back to the Sand Flats road. Thanks to Ber for leading this great trail. It’s always a plus when you can wheel warmly in December!

A good group showed up promptly at the Cinema for a scenic and interesting trip over to Rainbow Terrace.

We began the trip over on Spring Canyon Road off of 313, where we aired down. Jim then led us over to see some Barrier Rock Art which is several thousand years old.

After the group took their photos, we picked our way over to Dellenbaugh Tunnel.

We hiked down to the tunnel and explored it through to the other side.

After a bit of hiking, it was back to the Jeeps (and one Suzuki) for a drive over to the lunch stop, Secret Spire. This is an incredible rock formation and the weather was warm so this was an enjoyable place to take a break.

After lunch, the horn blew and it was time to do the second half of the trail. We were back on the county roand and over to Rainbow Terrace. Jim stopped at an unusual place along a wash and took us up to look at some “strange” rocks. He calls them donkey rocks and they are quite phallic appearing.

Again, more hiking and more photo opportunities and then back to the rigs. Jim lead us along a beautiful cliff and down into the canyons below, working our way around to more Indian art. This time, the artists had left their handprints on the rocks.

Then after a bit of rock crawling up to the county road, we made our way back to 313 and back into town. I think everyone agreed that we saw a side of Moab that few ever see. Thanks Jim for a great trail!!
